About

The Somali Educational Research and Development Centre (SERDEC) is a non-governmental organization founded in 2010. Its mission is to support educational advancement in Somalia through two primary initiatives: education research and development. SERDEC has expertise in research, curriculum development, and training across various educational levels, including primary, secondary, and tertiary education. Additionally, SERDEC focuses on community education to address illiteracy and empower individuals by providing opportunities to enhance their knowledge and skills, promote personal development, and stimulate economic growth and employment.

Mission

SERDEC’s mission is to deliver high-quality community education programs that foster learning and social development within the Somali community. The center seeks to eliminate illiteracy and empower individuals by enhancing their knowledge and skills, supporting personal growth, economic development, and employment opportunities. Additionally, SERDEC aims to advance educational development at all levels in Somalia, promote educational research, and publish scholarly articles.

Objectives

SERDEC has established the following objectives:

ü  To provide foundational education programs that help young people and adults gain literacy skills and reach sustainable proficiency levels.

ü  To offer vocational and life skills training that fosters and encourages learner engagement, promotes motivation, and supports ongoing reflection and analysis of relevant issues.

ü  To increase awareness of various community challenges and guide individuals towards adopting healthier lifestyles.

ü  To advance educational development across all levels.

ü  To encourage educational research and the publication of academic papers.

Activities and Services

SERDEC’s education program provides the following activities and services:

ü  Basic Education Programs: The center offers literacy classes for individuals with limited or no formal education, focusing on reading, writing, and numeracy skills to help enhance their livelihoods.

ü  Vocational and Life Skills Training: This program equips individuals with practical skills in various areas, including tailoring, carpentry, computer literacy, and business management.

ü  Community Awareness Campaigns: SERDEC runs campaigns to raise awareness about key issues impacting the community, such as health, hygiene, and social challenges.

ü  Advocacy: SERDEC promotes equitable access to education for all individuals, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic background.

ü  Curriculum Development: SERDEC is involved in developing curricula to improve the courses offered in schools, colleges, and universities by adhering to established standards. Key aspects of this process include:

o   Analyzing student test data.

o   Evaluating textbooks and other educational resources.

o   Assessing teacher performance.

o   Creating syllabi and other educational materials.

o   Enhancing teaching methods and integrating various technologies in education.

ü  Workshops and Seminars: SERDEC offers training through workshops and seminars to ensure that teaching and administrative staff at all levels possess the necessary technical skills to perform their roles effectively.

ü  Educational Consulting Programs: These are services offered by the center to assist individuals or educational institutions in improving educational performance. These programs include academic guidance, performance assessment, curriculum development, teacher training, providing learning strategies, and psychological and social support, with the aim of enhancing the quality of education and achieving better outcomes for learners.

ü  Education in Emergencies programs: The center participates in providing educational services during crises such as armed conflicts or natural disasters.
